Welcome to Torrington Amateur Athletic Club

We are a small friendly club who meet at 6.00pm on a Wednesday evening at the local secondary school and are open to any runner of any ability. Please come and join us, or if you have any questions please contact us on the link.

Torrington Athletic Club was formed in about 1980 by Maurice Cockwill and Roger Davey.  Committee meetings were held in the early days at the Newmarket Inn in an upstairs room. These days the Torrington Arms is the venue.  The landlady Sally makes us all very welcome and provides sandwiches after each Wednesday club session - and EVERYONE is welcome!

Membership numbers fluctuate according to whether it is an Olympic year or not! We currently have over 80 members.  Children are welcome from the age of 11yrs.

An average of 45 runners of all abilities turn out on Wednesday evenings, some come every week and others when it suits them. We would like to encourage more people to join whether they are beginners, people who just like somebody to run with or well established athletes. All are very welcome and can make what they want to out of a nights training.

In the summer if the school track is marked out and not too soggy we can do track work, but it is a very short season as the school breaks up in July and the track grows over very quickly.

We hold 3 annual races: 'The Round the Tree' race at Mayfair, the 'Back in 5' in Sept and the 'Christmas Caper' usually the Sunday before Christmas. All are well supported but more entries are always welcome.

There are opportunities to enter track and cross country competitions.   Leaflets and entry forms advertising these and many other events are on display every week in the gym.

We have the beautiful commons land to run on in the summer months and make good use of it. During the winter months the now vacant Torridge Vale Creamery, or one of the many hills like Mill Street, have to suffice to torture us.  We are fortunate to have qualified coaches leading the sessions who will do their best to encourage and work everyone to their own ability.

Membership covers the cost of renting the school gym, including the use of the showers and changing rooms.
